Roshydromet’s new energy efficient and compact computing cluster with peak performance of 35 TFLOPS based on innovative RSC Tornado architecture with liquid cooling, Intel® Xeon® E5-2690 processors and Intel® S2600JF server boards has become a tool for Russian meteorologists to further develop operational technologies in order to improve accuracy, shorten the lead time and increase refinement of weather forecasts. The upgraded computing cluster performs calculation and modeling to solve a number of urgent tasks faced by the Hydrometcenter of Russia, Roshydromet’s leading operational and scientific center in the area of monitoring of current situation and the development of atmospheric processes.

Roshydromet’s Main Computing Center is located in the densely populated center of Moscow city, which significantly restricts electric power supply. Additionally, the cost of new power
lines and energy is a significant restrictive factor for the organization’s operating budget. Tasks handled by Roshydromet require maximum performance of the computing cluster with minimum total cost of ownership of the system in terms of all types of resources (including energy, personnel and maintenance).

Roshydromet has chosen RSC Group’s computing cluster based on innovative RSC Tornado architecture, an energyefficient and high-performance technology with liquid cooling of standard
server boards and х86 processors. In order to satisfy client’s requirements in terms of the system construction, maintenance and management RSC Group proposed to use a new class of
its own solutions — RSC DCmini. RSC DCmini is an all-in-one solution for the high performance computing segment. The solution includes all the subsystems required by a modern data center, i.e. a powerful server farm, communication networks, data storage systems, as well as power supply, cooling and firefighting subsystems. All the subsystems are placed in two
standard racks with a total footprint of 2 sq. m.

The upgraded computing cluster performs calculation and modeling to solve a number of urgent tasks faced by the Hydrometcenter of Russia, Roshydromet’s leading operational and scientific center in the area of monitoring of current situation and the development of atmospheric processes.
For example, it allows improving the accuracy of forecasting and modeling of weather conditions in the Sochi area at a test competition held in advance of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, by decreasing the calcula-tion span from several kilometers to 800 meters.
