RSC creates the most innovative and one of the most powerful supercomputer centers in Russia for St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University on the basis of latest Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 processors and Intel® Xeon Phi™ co-processors. The project is in the scope of the Federal Program "Research and development in priority fields of science and technology in Russia for 2014-2020" and Federal Targeted Investment Program "Upgrading Technical Base of the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University based on creation of a Supercomputing Center".  The new "Polytechnic" supercomputing center (SCC) at the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University is focused on solving interdisciplinary problems in natural sciences and design of complex technical systems for high-tech knowledge-intensive segments of Russian industry and economy. 


The purpose of the Supercomputing Center is to improve competitiveness of the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University as one of the leading Russian educational and scientific institutions using supercomputer technologies to solve relevant scientific problems, develop hi-tech industrial products and train engineering staff with high competence in mutli-discipline R&D.

RSC group is currently creating the most the most innovative and one of the most powerful computing centers in Russia with peak performance over 1.1 PFLOPS for the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University. It is the first project in CIS based on the latest Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 server processors.

SPbPU project includes a powerful hybrid computing complex developed in Russia. This complex includes latest innovations of the RSC group and other vendors of HPC equipment.

The first part of the complex - "Polytechnic RSC Tornado" is based on  RSC Tornado cluster architecture with direct liquid cooling. Its peak performance will be about 830 teraflops, and some of its resource will also provide cloud, VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) and graphical services. This computing complex is based on the latest high-performance server processors of Intel® Xeon® E5-2697 v3 family, Intel® S2600KP/S2600WT server boards for this processor generation, latest Intel® SSD solid-state drives for enterprise data centers.


The second part of the complex - "Polytechnic RSC PetaStream" contains a unique high-dense massive parallel RSC PetaStream system with direct liquid cooling and total performance of 0.3 PFLOPS. The system is based on Intel® server products — 288x 60-core Intel® Xeon Phi 5120D processors, Intel® server boards and Intel® SSD drives for enterprise data centers. The system will support over 69,120 executable threads. RSC PetaStream implements an innovative subsystem based on the leading industry standard of 400V DC power developed in cooperation with Emerson Electric. This subsystem enables power distribution efficiency over 90% improving overall energy efficiency of the system, reduction of operating costs and overall reliability of the complex.

The complex also includes a parallel data storage systems based on Lustre distributed file system that supports an uses up to 1 petabyte of data and a 0.5 PB block-based storage for cloud environments. Both storages use server technologies based on Intel architecture.  


SCC resources

Scientists of SPbPU and other R&D organizations of St. Petersburg and Russia will be able to use SCC resources to solve relevant scientific problems in the fields of mechanics, hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, solid physics, plasma physics, material science, electronics, computing and quantum chemistry, biophysics and biotechnologies. Developers and engineers of the university and industrial enterprises will be able to use its CAD/CAM systems to design new machinery and vehicles for such priority areas as power industry, aircraft industry, biotechnologies, radioelectronics. For students and teachers the Center will provide the technology base for deep training of specialists in the fields of computer science and computer engineering.

The massive parallel RSC PetaStream system enables development of the latest applications to make breakthroughs in bioengineering, astrophysics, chemistry, radioelectronics and control systems.
